NEA 2012 Representative Assembly What is it and Why Should You Care?
The Representative Assembly (RA) is NEA’s highest decision-making body. With over 9,000 voting delegates the RA is the world’s largest democratic deliberative body. It meets every July to debate issues that impact public education, elects NEA officers, approve the NEA budget, and set policy for the 3.2 million member Association. This year the RA is scheduled from June 29 – July 6, 2012 in Washington D.C. with exhibits, caucus meetings, non-profit fundraising, awards dinners, and other events.
Delegates to the RA are elected by members in every state and local affiliate. By casting your vote, you have a say in who will best represent your interests. It is important to take a few minutes to read the bios of each of the candidates. Talk to your colleagues who may know some of the people running. Ask your site reps about the process.
